Integrated Digital Television Global Market Forecast

The success of free-to-air digital terrestrial television markets in the UK, France, Spain, Italy and Germany has resulted in a marked improvement in the prospects for Integrated Digital TVs over the past year or so. We project that digital terrestrial tuners will become the norm across the bulk of the European TV market over the coming years. The most significant impact in the past year or so has come from the FCC mandates to include ATSC digital terrestrial tuners in all TVs sold in the US. This process has, after some initial hesitation, resulted in a surge in IDTV sales in the US. The number an integrated digital TVs installed in the US as a consequence has reached nearly 70 million units, although evidence suggests that few owners are making use of digital terrestrial services, instead opting for cable or satellite as their primary television source. Our report concludes that global demand for integrated digital TVs in 2007 will reach 61.7 million units, worth $61.8bn in retail revenues.
