Bids for Hong Kong '4G' mobile licenses reach HK$489m

14 января 2009

Hong Kong's telecommunications industry regulator said it has received bids of up to HK$489 million for licenses to operate broadband wireless access services, known as fourth-generation mobile telephone services.

The Office of the Telecommunications Authority, or OFTA, said in a statement late Monday that five rounds of bidding on Monday resulted in bids as high as HK$489 million.

The regulator said bidding will continue Tuesday, but declined to name the highest bidders or specify the number of companies that offered the highest bid.

Last month, OFTA said it received five bids for the 4G mobile licenses, but didn't specify when the licenses would be issued.

PCCW Ltd. and Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd. submitted a joint bid. CSL New World Mobility Ltd., City Telecom Ltd., SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings Ltd., and China Mobile (Hong Kong) Ltd., which is a wholly owned unit of China Mobile Ltd., each submitted a bid.
