Mobile application growth surged in 2010

The number of downloadable applications on offer for mobile smartphones grew rapidly in 2010 from a year earlier, with iPhone-maker Apple Inc.'s App Store showing the fastest growth rate in absolute numbers, Dutch research firm Distimo said in a report Monday.

While the number of applications available for the iPhone through Apple's App Store doubled in the past year to around 300,000, its rivals generated faster growth in terms of percentage, although from a lower level, Distimo said.

The number of apps in Android Market, the online store for smartphones based on Google Inc.'s open Android platform, more than quintupled to around 130,000, the research firm said.

Handset vendors including Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., HTC Corp. and Sony Ericsson use Android's fast-spreading mobile platform in their smartphones.

Nokia Corp.'s online Ovi Store and Research in Motion Ltd's BlackBerry App World both grew around 260% in 2010, to 25,000 and 18,000 applications respectively, said Distimo.

Sales of smartphones, which have open operating systems allowing for downloads of additional content from online stores, have increased rapidly over the past few years.

According to research firm Gartner, smartphone sales to end-users surged 96% in the third quarter 2010 from a year earlier to around 81 million units, or around 19% of all mobile phones.

The most popular smartphone gaming application overall was the Angry Birds series from Finland's Rovio Mobile, and the most popular non-game application was Facebook, Distimo said.

While the number of apps on offer has grown quickly, the proportion of free applications has also increased, the research firm said, adding that the average price of those apps which aren't free has fallen as well, typically to a range of around $1-$1.99.

In Apple's App Store, the top 300 free applications generated over 3 million downloads per day in December 2010, while only 350,000 paid applications on average were downloaded each day, it added.
